BROOKE GLADSTONE: We're back with On the Media. I'm Brooke Gladstone.
BOB GARFIELD: And I'm Bob Garfield with a few of your letters. Couple of weeks ago we covered what a dangerous war it's been for journalists. Listener Carol Van Ek however, was unimpressed. "Twelve journalists dead?" she wrote. "Tough! If journalists don't wish to be in harm's way then they shouldn't go to a war zone."
BROOKE GLADSTONE:In an essay on the editing of the statue toppling in Baghdad, I likened it to the semi-staged raising of the flag at Iwo Jima and Micah J. Hall wrote "A very good segment, but one error I noticed was the description of the persons who raised the flag. I am proud to point out that those brave men who raised the flag that day consisted of five Marines and one Navy Corpsman."
BOB GARFIELD:Terrence McCarthy of South Kingstown, Rhode Island wrote "I loved your segment on hummers, or as I now call them after hearing your guest's comments, 'FUVs'" But another listener who didn't leave his name charged that "the only people that hate SUVs are those that can't afford them. Really just get over the envy. You will get there in life."
BROOKE GLADSTONE:And we thought that Rupert Murdoch is the mogul everyone loves to hate, but Ted Chalkidis of Wakefield, Massachusetts wrote in with "Next time you or your guests feel a need to be overly critical of Rupert Murdoch's media and other holdings, think of these two words: free enterprise."
BOB GARFIELD:Okay. Keep those letters coming. We pick up our mail at onthemedia.org. Don't forget to include your name and where you're from. [MUSIC]
