Brian Lehrer: Brian Lehrer on WNYC. Now we'll wrap up today's show with today's edition, Edition 4 of our Shop Listener series. We're inviting those of you who own brick-and-mortar stores on Long Island and in the Northern suburbs. That includes the Connecticut Northern suburbs, as well as the ones in New York State. Yesterday was all New Jersey to call in if you sell something that would make a great holiday gift this season. Shop Listener, 212-433-WNYC. Call in and promote your business.
Again, as a reminder to everybody what this is, every year when the holiday season rolls around, we run the Shop Listener series in which we invite those of you, mostly small business owners listening in to call in and promote yourself if you're a WNYC listener. It's one way we try to give back to our community of listeners. For everyone else, if you haven't gone gift shopping yet for Christmas or Hanukkah, Hanukkah is coming right up a week from today or Kwanzaa, consider buying from a fellow Brian Lehrer Show or WNYC listener rather than any of the other options.
We're inviting you if you have one of those stores to call in. We've been having these call-ins for people with stores from different areas of our region all this week. This is the last geographical one today. Tomorrow, it's going to be for those of you who only sell things online, which we know a lot of people do these days, but for right now, Long Island or Northern suburbs in New York State or Connecticut. 212-433-WNYC. Hello, Fairfield County. Hello, Westchester, Rockland [unintelligible 00:01:46] Dutchess.
Anyone listening in Old Store, Sullivan Counties, and obviously, Nassau or Suffolk? 212-433-WNYC, 212-433-9692. It's Shop Listener Edition 4 out of 5. Give us a call if you own a brick-and-mortar store anywhere on Long Island or in the Northern suburbs in New York or Connecticut and you can promote your wares. 212-433-WNYC, 433-9692. Also, anybody who's selling holiday gifts listening right now can add to our online gift guide. You don't have to be from any particular place at any time to do that. That's at wnyc.org/shoplistener.
Everyone else, go look at that gift guide to see what WNYC listener you might buy from, wnyc.org/shoplistener, and we'll take your calls from Long Island in the Northern suburbs right after this.

Brian Lehrer: Brian Lehrer on WNYC, Shop Listener Episode 4 for those of you with brick-and-mortar stores selling holiday gifts on Long Island or in the Northern suburbs. Candace in Islip, you're on WNYC. Hi, Candace.
Candace: Hi there. My name is Candace. I own a small plant shop in Islip, New York called GrowinShade. We sell an assortment of indoor house plants as well as some home decor pieces such as candles, pot stands, and we also offer an array of workshops such as pottery-making, terrarium building, painting pots, watercolor. It's just a nice little space in the downtown area of Islip, so if you're looking for some gifts, [crosstalk] stop by.
Brian Lehrer: Very nice. You said it's called Grow and Shade Plant Shop, right?
Candace: Yes, GrowinShade. G-R-O-W-I-N Shade, S-H-A-D-E. It's the same for our website, growinshade.com.
Brian Lehrer: Candace, thank you very much. One of the things I love about these Shop Listener call-ins is that it's giving a lot of people, I think it's certainly given me in the past, ideas for gifts that you may not think of. Maybe you don't think of a plant as something that you would give somebody as a holiday gift. There's Candace from GrowinShade in Islip. Barbara in Larchmont, you're on WNYC. Hi, Barbara.
Barbara: Hi. How are you? Calling for The Dressed Pretzel & Co located 141 Larchmont Avenue. Gourmet, beautiful Belgian chocolate-covered pretzels. We're currently participating in the Wells Fargo Holiday Market in Hudson Yards.
Brian Lehrer: Oh, so that's in Manhattan and Hudson Yards, but the shop is The Dressed Pretzel & Co in Larchmont in Westchester?
Barbara: Correct, on Larchmont Avenue.
Brian Lehrer: Good luck with it. Here's Nancy calling about an event in Fairfield, Connecticut. Nancy, you're on WNYC. Hello.
Nancy: Hi, Brian. How are you? I'm calling about the Scandinavian Club's Annual Scandinavian Christmas Market, which is taking place this Saturday, December 2nd from 10:00 to 4:00. It's an organization of Scandinavian people who live in and around Fairfield. Every year, they celebrate Christmas in the Scandinavian way, which is lots of wonderful food, live music, and Glögg, and they've recently invited crafters and makers from all over to come and sell their wares.
I will be there with [unintelligible 00:05:50] NYC, selling some Christmas items, and I will be surrounded by wonderful makers with candles and food and blown glass ornaments and all kinds of lovely things.
Brian Lehrer: Say again exactly where it's taking place.
Nancy: It's on South Pine Creek Road in Fairfield, Connecticut.
Brian Lehrer: Nancy, thank you very much. Good luck with it. Janet in Muttontown on Long Island, you're on WNYC. Hi, Janet.
Janet: Hey, Brian. I'm such a longtime fan for decades and decades. We are Big River Barn Rescue. We're in the middle of Nassau County in the middle of over 500 acres of beautiful preserved open space, and we take people trail riding through the trails. You'll feel like you're hours away upstate. People don't know about the Muttontown Preserve. It's unbelievably beautiful. You can come horseback riding with us, and you can call and get gift certificates and prepaid rides as gifts.
Brian Lehrer: You said it's called Big River Barn Rescue?
Janet: Yes. I want you to come horseback riding with me, Brian, because I've been such a fan for so long.
Brian Lehrer: [chuckles] That would be nice. We'll see if I can make it out there. Why is rescue in the title?
Janet: Because all of our horses are rescued horses.
Brian Lehrer: Ah, that's wonderful. Janet, thank you very much. Big River Barn Rescue. Randy in Westchester, you're on WNYC. Hi, Randy.
Randy: Hey, how you doing NYC family? I own Abyss Scuba at 29 Marble Avenue in Pleasantville. Like it says, scuba diving. We teach scuba diving, we sell scuba diving equipment. We would love to have everybody be part of the underwater world.
Brian Lehrer: There's another one that people may not have thought of before, so it's the Big River Barn Rescue, but scuba lessons for Christmas.
Randy: Also, we do have a special for $200. You can have a try scuba. If you want to give this to your friends, what we'll do is we'll put them in a scuba outfit, take them into the pool, and give them at the end a video of their experience.
Brian Lehrer: Cool. Now, did you say it was called Abyss Scuba, like into the abyss?
Randy: Yes, it is. It's not what most people think. Actually--
Brian Lehrer: [chuckles] Why did you take that name?
Randy: Believe it or not, I had a Chinese reading and the woman pulled the sticks out and she said that my sign was the abyss. It's not what Europeans think of as the abyss into the water, it's actually the abyss into yourself.
Brian Lehrer: Thank you, Randy. Good luck with it. Chelsea up in Gardiner, New York, you're on WNYC. Hi, Chelsea.
Chelsea: Hi, Brian. This is Chelsea. I'm calling with Far Out Finds. We are a vintage mid-century design company that imports from Europe, specifically Denmark and Czechia. I guess our popular items around the holidays are our pendant lights and our Danish bread slicers. This year we imported a bunch of [unintelligible 00:09:04] terracotta pots, really beautiful from Tuscany, and we're 15% off our entire inventory right now.
Brian Lehrer: Far Out Finds in Gardiner. Good luck with it. Harry in Huntington Station, you're on WNYC. Hi, Harry.
Harry: Good morning, Brian. Longtime listener. I own Urban Specialty Woods in Huntington Station, New York. We make custom furniture. We have several tables available, but on smaller items, we have beautiful charcuterie boards and cutting boards that are ready for immediate gifts.
Brian Lehrer: Very nice. Urban Specialty Woods you said the name of it is, right?
Harry: Correct.
Brian Lehrer: Good luck with it. I think we're going to end there. Thanks to all of you who called from Long Island and the Northern suburbs today. Thanks again to all of you who called from New Jersey yesterday, from Brooklyn and Manhattan on Monday, and from the Bronx, Staten Island, and Queens on Tuesday. That ends the geographical area-based call-ins in our Shop Listener series.
Tomorrow, we've got one more to go, and that's for those of you who don't have a store at all, brick-and-mortar store, those of you who are selling holiday gifts online. Remember the point, we're just trying to help out listeners in the WNYC community who happen to sell gifts that are appropriate for Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, or whatever your gift-giving occasion is at this time of year.
If you are a WNYC listener, wouldn't it be nice to Shop Listener if you can? There are those for today. If you have only online sales, we'll have a call-in for you tomorrow. Again, anybody may list your store and anyone may go to see what stores are listed on the online gift guide at wnyc.org/shoplistener. Wnyc.org/shoplistener. Brian Lehrer on WNYC. Stay tuned for Alison.
