Brian Lehrer: It's The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. Good morning again, everyone. It's membership drive quiz time. Today a low-stakes pop quiz on the subways and commuter rails. Do you think your subways and commuter rail lines? If you think you might be able to answer two subway or commuter rail questions in a row right, you might win a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap. You can give it a shot at 212-433-WNYC. You definitely do not need to be in MTA or NJ Transit cartographer to get these questions right.
If you haven't stumbled upon one of these 11 o'clock quizzes before, what is this? Well, we are in our annual fall membership drive and during the beginning of this 11:00 AM show, every day during the drive, we're bringing back this perennial favorite, a low-stakes pop quiz. We don't give grades, but yes, we do give prizes. Again, two in a row right and you'll win the new this year Brian Lehrer Show chambray blue baseball hat. Who wants to give it a shot? It's a subway and commuter rail quiz written by Brian Lehrer Show producer, Esperanza Rosenbaum. Let's dive right in with Drew in Brooklyn. Drew, you're on WNYC. Ready to play?
Drew: Yes, definitely. Good morning.
Brian Lehrer: Good morning. All right. I'm on the only Long Island railroad line that doesn't go through Jamaica. What line am I on?
Drew: That's going to be the Port Washington line. Is that the name of the line?
Brian Lehrer: That is absolutely the name of the line or the branch. All right. I just got off the New Jersey Transit train going to a concert at the Prudential Center, which train station did I arrive at?
Drew: Prudential Center, is that Newark Penn, Newark Penn Station?
Brian Lehrer: That is Newark Penn Station. How about that? You are a guy from Brooklyn. You drew a Long Island question and a New Jersey question, and you've gotten both rights. Drew, you have earned your Brian Lehrer Show baseball hat. Hang on, we'll take your address off the air. Mike in the Bronx, you're on WNYC. Hi, Mike.
Mike: Good morning, Brian.
Brian Lehrer: All right. I am off to Prospect Park to enjoy a walk in the park followed by a movie at what was formerly known as the Park Slope Pavilion, but is now Nighthawk Cinema. What station on the F or G line is most convenient?
Mike: Wow.
Brian Lehrer: Unfortunately, I know a guy from the Bronx is getting this Brooklyn question. It's the luck of the draw, but go ahead.
Mike: I'm going to say 7th Avenue.
Brian Lehrer: Sorry. That's a pretty good guess for that vicinity, but it's actually 15th Street, Prospect Park. Next, we're going to go to Patrick in Long Island City. Hi Patrick.
Patrick: Hey Brian. Good morning.
Brian Lehrer: With the luck of the draw, you're calling from Queens and you actually get a Queen's question here because today I'd like to see a Mets game and then enjoy some dim sum in Flushing. What subway line do I need to take?
Patrick: Well, Brian, I'm a huge Mets fan like yourself so the answer of course would be the 7 Train.
Brian Lehrer: That is correct. Here's a bonus question. If you get this right, you win. If you get it wrong, no penalty. One Long Island railroad line makes the same stops. It stops at Citi Field and it stops at Flushing, which line?
Patrick: I want to say Port Washington.
Brian Lehrer: Port Washington is right the same as the answer to the earlier question.
Patrick: Excellent.
Brian Lehrer: You win a Brian Lehrer Show baseball hat. It's a little lighter than Mets blue, but maybe you’ll wear it to the game. Patrick, thank you very much. All right. We’re going to take your-- Oh, and Patrick, of course, hold on, we're going to take your address off the air. Mitch in Brooklyn, you ready to play?
Mitch: Yes. Good morning.
Brian Lehrer: All right. Which line of the Metro-North ends in Poughkeepsie? There are only three.
Mitch: No idea.
Brian Lehrer: No idea. All right. Mitch, sorry. Should we give Elizabeth in Brooklyn a chance on this one? Elizabeth, I'm going to give you a choice. You can either take that one or say you have no idea either, and go on to the next question.
Elizabeth: It's Elizabeth here. I'll say Harlem Hudson line.
Brian Lehrer: Those are two lines. The Harlem line and the Hudson line.
Elizabeth: Oh, those are two.
Brian Lehrer: Which one?
Elizabeth: Oh my gosh. Oh, yes, yes, yes. I went to [unintelligible 00:05:06] my son went to Bard. Hudson?
Brian Lehrer: It is on the Hudson line. That's right.
Elizabeth: That's good.
Brian Lehrer: The Hudson line will get you closer to Bard. It's a different line that'll get you closer to [unintelligible 00:05:18], but that's right. The Hudson line, northernmost point is Poughkeepsie. All right. Name-- let's see. You're in Brooklyn. This is a Queen's question.
Elizabeth: Yes.
Brian Lehrer: Name two out of the four subway lines you can take at Court Square.
Elizabeth: Oh, at Court Square. I know the F the M, not the seven, the G. Oh my God, the G goes there. Now I just need one more.
Brian Lehrer: Well, no, you only had to name two of the four subway trains you could take at Court Square. Cue the trumpets. It's a little generous to give it to you because the first two, well, you said the F train first, which was right, the M train, which was wrong, but then you said the G, which is right. The F goes there, the G goes there, the E goes there and the number 7 does.
Elizabeth: Oh, it does go there.
Brian Lehrer: Elizabeth, congratulations. Hang on. We're going to take your address off the air and send you a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap. All right. Let's see. Zach in Crown Heights. Hi, Zach. Ready to play?
Zach: Oh, no, let's do it.
Brian Lehrer: Oh, no. All right. You're in Brooklyn, but you get a Manhattan question by the luck of the draw. I'm heading downtown today on the West Side, what train starts at 242nd Street, then Cortland Park and ends at South Ferry.
Zach: Oh, I don't want to get it wrong. It's either 1 or the 2. I think it's the 1.
Brian Lehrer: It is the number 1 train.
Zach: You take the 1, right Brian?
Brian Lehrer: Very good. Absolutely, I can take the 1 or the A from where I am to head Downtown. I'm taking a night class at Hunter College to brush up on my Spanish, what train station would I get off to be at Hunter College? You need the station on this one?
Zach: The station. It's on the Q train, right? It's on the East Side in the 60s. Is it-- damn. I'm going to say 68th Street.
Brian Lehrer: 68th Street is right. You got the line wrong because it's a 6 train but you got station right and that was the question. Hang on, we're going to take your address Zach and send you a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap. All right. Dee in the Bronx. People know your subways and commuter rails. We're giving away a lot of baseball hats. Dee in the Bronx, you're on WNYC and you're going to be our last contestant. Hi there.
Dee: Hi. Good morning.
Brian Lehrer: A new exhibit opened up at the Brooklyn Museum. Name one train I can take to get there right to the Brooklyn Museum, two lines.
Dee: I don't know.
Brian Lehrer: You're in the Bronx and you drew a Brooklyn question.
Dee: All right, that's not fair.
Brian Lehrer: Take a guess.
Dee: The 2?
Brian Lehrer: The two is correct.
Dee: Oh my God.
Brian Lehrer: The 2 and the 3. There are also some other close stations. The 5, the B, the Q and the S, but the 2 and the 3 are the ones that go right to the Brooklyn Museum. For the baseball hat, I just got off the ferry heading into the Lost Borough, what's the first stop on the Staten Island railway?
Dee: St. George?
Brian Lehrer: St. George is right. Pretty good-
Dee: I've never even been there.
Brian Lehrer: -for someone from the Bronx. Dee, thank you very much. Hang on, we're going to take your address off the air and send you a Brian Lehrer Show baseball hat. That's our quiz for today. We're doing a quiz every day at this time during the membership drive. Tomorrow's quiz, wait, I have it right here. Tomorrow's quiz is going to be-- Wait, oh, I know. Oh, it's really going to be fun tomorrow because we have everyone's favorite quizmaster joining as a special guest for tomorrow's quiz, Peter Sagal, host of Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! will be here at eleven o'clock tomorrow to join me for one of these. Brian Lehrer on WNYC, much more to come.
