Brian Lehrer: It's The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. Good morning again, everyone. Yes, every day during the pledge drive, with all the serious news to cover, and that we're trying to raise money for the station and the breaks, we're also doing a 10-question quiz to break things up and have a little fun in the middle of the show each day, different theme each day with prizes, choice pieces of WNYC swag.
Today, it'll be two in a row. You can choose between a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap and the new WNYC vintage van T-shirt with a really nice design. A van like a public address van that used to drive around the streets of New York City, back in the 1930s. A little graphic of that on the shirt. Today, it's a 10-question quiz about the New York City suburbs. Yesterday, we did questions about New York City neighborhoods. Today, it's the suburban villages, towns, and small cities of Westchester, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Long Island.
We have people lined up ready to play. We're going to start with George in Carlstadt, New Jersey, in Bergen County. Hi, George. Ready to play?
George: Yes, sir.
Brian Lehrer: All right. This is a Jersey question, but it's a history question. Which Native American tribe gave the names to most of the towns in New Jersey with Indigenous names like Hackensack, Mahwah, and so many more? Do you know the name of the tribe?
George: The Lenape.
Brian Lehrer: The Lenape is right.
George: The Lenape.
Brian Lehrer: Absolutely right. Question two for the hat or the shirt, this hamlet on the south shore of Nassau County on Long Island has an Indigenous name, and the school district is in a battle with New York State over its use of Indigenous imagery. That is, they want to keep their Native American-inspired mascot. What town is it, or what's the team name? The mascot name that they're trying to keep.
George: Whoa. It's on the tip of my tongue, and I can't remember. I'm sorry.
Brian Lehrer: You want to take a shot at one of the common Native American mascot names that are out there? I'll give you a hint.
George: [unintelligible 00:02:24]
Brian Lehrer: I'll give you a hint. Think Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
George: [unintelligible 00:02:31]
Brian Lehrer: That didn't do it.
George: I'm drawing a blank. I'm sorry.
Brian Lehrer: Not enough of a football fan. Okay, George, thanks for trying. It's the Chiefs, the Massapequa Chiefs. Of course, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce play for the NFL team, the Kansas City Chiefs, but they're also the Chiefs. All right. Let's go next to Bill in Yorkville. Hi, Bill. Ready to play?
Bill: Hey, thanks for having me on. I'm glad I didn't get that last question.
Brian Lehrer: Ha. Question three. Speaking of the Indigenous names of villages and towns around here, if you'd like to take a trip to visit Sagamore Hill, which is the name of Teddy Roosevelt's house, he lived there from 1885 until 1919 when it was nicknamed the Summer White House, which town on Long Island would you be going to for the famous Teddy Roosevelt House? I'll give you a hint if you need one.
Bill: I need a hint.
Brian Lehrer: Think a common type of shellfish, which some people believe enhances sex drive.
Bill: Oyster Bay.
Brian Lehrer: Oyster Bay. By the way, I gather science has never proven that about oysters. For the hat or the shirt, still on Long Island, if you take the Wantagh State Parkway or the Meadowbrook State Parkway all the way south, where are you? I'll give you a hint on this one if you need it.
Bill: Yes. I would have done much better with New Jersey questions. I'll take a hint.
Brian Lehrer: A lot of people from the city go here. You can lay in the sand or swim in the salt water where the Wantagh State Parkway and the Meadowbrook State end.
Bill: Since you said a lot of people from the city, I'm just going to guess. Is it Jones Beach?
Brian Lehrer: Jones Beach is right.
[fanfare]
Bill: All right.
Brian Lehrer: Would you like a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap or a vintage van T-shirt?
Bill: I'd love the baseball cap. Thanks for having me.
Brian Lehrer: Hang on, we're going to take your mailing address off the air for that. Let's go next to Alice in South Orange. Alice, ready to play?
Alice: Oh, I sure am.
Brian Lehrer: No. Actually, Alice, hang on. We're going to take you next. I want to go next to Marisa in Pelham, New York, because I'm going to take a Westchester caller here for some Westchester questions for the maximum opportunity to win. Hey, Marisa, you there?
Marisa: Yes. Hi.
Brian Lehrer: Okay. We're traveling north of the city. Which of these towns is not in Westchester? New Rochelle, New Paltz, Tarrytown, or Bronxville?
Marisa: New Paltz.
Brian Lehrer: They're all in Westchester except for one. New Paltz is right. Question six, for the hat or the shirt. I'm on a Metro-North train going through Hastings, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington, Tarrytown, and winding up in Croton-Harmon. What Metro-North train line am I on?
Marisa: The Hudson Line?
Brian Lehrer: The Hudson Line is right. [fanfare] It doesn't go through Pelham, where you are, but good view of the river on that train. Would you like a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap or a vintage van T-shirt?
Marisa: The T-shirt, please.
Brian Lehrer: T-shirt heading to Pelham. Hang on, we'll take your address off the air. Let's go next to Nancy in the Bronx. Hi, Nancy. Ready to-- Oh, I said Alice was next. I forgot about Alice. Back to Alice in South Orange.
Alice: Thank you.
Brian Lehrer: Alice, thank you for your patience.
Alice: Oh [unintelligible 00:06:26] Thank you.
Brian Lehrer: Back to New Jersey for question seven. This is about the Bridgegate scandal from 2013. An aide to then-Governor Christie sent an email to a colleague that famously read, "Time for some traffic problems in--" Can you name the town? The town, or technically the borough, in Bergen County?
Alice: Fort Lee.
Brian Lehrer: Fort Lee is absolutely right. For the hat or the shirt, which of these New Jersey places is not on the Jersey Shore? Spring Lake, Long Branch, New Brunswick, or Belmar?
Alice: New Brunswick.
Brian Lehrer: New Brunswick is right. [fanfare] A little further inland. Would you like the Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap or the vintage van T-shirt?
Alice: Does the Brian Lehrer baseball cap come in any color other than blue with the red writing?
Brian Lehrer: No, the one color.
Alice: No. Okay, we already have one. Thank you very much. We'll take the shirt [unintelligible 00:07:35]
Brian Lehrer: Okay, Alice. You gave us an idea, though. Maybe we'll have to make a few more colors. I always say it's ecumenical in that it's not Yankees blue and it's not Mets blue, so it works for any kind of New York baseball fan when you're talking about blue hats. Maybe we should make a red one, a green one, and an orange one to go to South Orange, like where you live. All right, let's see. We're heading north here. Since we're heading north, how about Lawrence in Anchorage, Alaska? Lawrence, you're on WNYC. Hi, there.
Lawrence: Hi. How are you? I grew up in New Jersey, so I'm hoping something New Jersey, but maybe not. [laughs]
Brian Lehrer: Okay. Well, if you get to the second question here, it's going to be partly New Jersey. Yes, we're not as north as Anchorage with this one, but we are going to take a trip to Connecticut.
Lawrence: Oh, boy.
Brian Lehrer: If I'm on the Metro-North heading towards Stamford, the first stop in Connecticut is usually this town. I'll give you a hint if you need it.
Lawrence: I think I'll need a hint, please.
Brian Lehrer: It's very fancy, and there's a village in Manhattan with the same name.
Lawrence: A village in Manhattan. Oh.
Brian Lehrer: There's a village in Manhattan with the same name.
Lawrence: Not Greenwich.
Brian Lehrer: [laughs] It is Greenwich.
Lawrence: Greenwich Village?
Brian Lehrer: Greenwich, Connecticut.
Lawrence: Greenwich Village. Okay. Greenwich, yes.
Brian Lehrer: Glad the Greenwich Village clue gave it away. All right. Here's the last question in the quiz for the hat or the shirt. We're going to end with a combo New Jersey, Long Island question. Both Billy Joel's and Bruce Springsteen's debut studio albums from the early 1970s feature the name of a city or village in our listening area. Can you name either one of them, the Billy Joel one or the Bruce Springsteen's?
Lawrence: The Hackensack? You're talking about Hackensack, New Jersey, or--
Brian Lehrer: Oh, no. It was greetings from somewhere else.
Lawrence: Oh, Asbury Park.
Brian Lehrer: Asbury Park is right. [fanfare] The trumpeters were [unintelligible 00:09:55] there.
Lawrence: [chuckles] I've been to Asbury Park many times, where they have a bust of Bruce Springsteen in the downtown area, so I know that, and I've been to the--
Brian Lehrer: Indeed. Greetings from Asbury Park, and Billy Joel's was Cold Spring Harbor, which is a village within the town of Huntington on Long Island. Lawrence, would you like us to send a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap or a vintage van T-shirt to Anchorage, Alaska?
Lawrence: Oh, thank you, Brian. I appreciate it. I always listen to you. I'd love to have the T-shirt, please.
Brian Lehrer: One T-shirt heading north and west. Listeners, that's our 10-question quiz for today. Brian Lehrer on WNYC. More to come.
