Brian Lehrer: It's The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. Good morning again, everyone. Once again, I'll say that this membership drive includes a 10-question quiz every day as we've done on some previous membership drives, and you seem to like it, and it breaks up the pitching and all the serious stuff on the show. We are doing another quiz series during this annual winter membership drive. Get two in a row right and win a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap or Brian Lehrer Show mug. Your choice on this 10-question quiz. Today it is a geo quiz. Can you answer the question, where am I? Two of them in a row to win a mug or a hat. Mike in the Bronx, ready to play? Mike, you there?
Mike: Yes, sir.
Brian Lehrer: Hi there. Okay. Question 1. I'm transferring from the R train to the 1 train. Can you get it just from that? Where am I?
Mike: Sure, you're at South Ferry.
Brian Lehrer: No, but I'll give you the second clue. I guess you could do that. You could get off at South Ferry, but I think you have to pay another fare. I'm at a busy tourist hotspot, center of the world.
Mike: You're at Times Square.
Brian Lehrer: Times Square is right. That is correct, and I'll have to double-check. Maybe you're right. Maybe you can transfer for free between the 1 and the R at South Ferry, but I didn't think so. Okay. Question 2. I have tickets to see the Brooklyn Nets. I'm in their home arena. Where am I?
Mike: You're at-- Oh, the name escapes me now, and I used to work right there.
Brian Lehrer: Oh, I thought this was going to be an easy one.
Mike: It is an easy one. I'm just getting old, Brian.
Brian Lehrer: Oh, we need the name. In 3, 2, 1.
Mike: Flatbush Avenue. Atlantic Avenue.
Brian Lehrer: All right. You gave us the intersection. I'm going to give it to you. It's the Barclays Center. It's not the, it's Barclays Center. Yes, and you got the intersection right. All right, Mike, you did it. You're going to pick a baseball hat or a mug. We'll do that off the air. We're going to go on to Al in Greenpoint. Al, ready to play?
Al: I'm ready to play, Brian. Thanks.
Brian Lehrer: Okay. Question 3. I'm in a park near the Flatiron Building, right next to the original Shake Shack. The park has the same name as a famous indoor garden. Where am I?
Al: At Madison Square Park.
Brian Lehrer: Absolutely right. Question 4, for the hat or the mug. I fell asleep on the eastbound 7 train, and accidentally took it to the last stop in Queens. What neighborhood am I in?
Al: Oh, that's Main Street stop and Flushing.
Brian Lehrer: Flushing is correct. [fanfare] Do you want the hat or the mug?
Al: All right. All my driving has paid off, Brian.
Brian Lehrer: [laughs] While you're driving, as opposed to subway riding. Would you like The Brian Lehrer Show hat, baseball cap, or the mug?
Al: I'd like the mug, please.
Brian Lehrer: All right. Hang on. We'll take your address off the air. We're going to go next to Kevin in Denver. Kevin, ready to play?
Kevin: Absolutely.
Brian Lehrer: All right. We've got two winners so far. Let's see if we can keep the streak going. Question number 5.
Kevin: Oh, boy.
Brian Lehrer: I'm in a place in New York City where Donald Trump did better than he did in Texas in the 2024 election. Not surprisingly then, this place held a vote some years ago on whether to secede from the city. Where am I?
Kevin: Staten Island.
Brian Lehrer: Staten Island is correct where Trump got 64% of the vote last year. He got 56% in Texas. In 1993, for those of you who don't know, in a non-binding resolution, the island voted in favor of secession from New York City but it never happened. The vote for that was almost identical to the percentage for Trump, 65%. All right. Question 6. For the hat or the mug? I'm in line at Luna Park. I'm not far from where Anora was filmed. This place is no longer an actual island. Where am I?
Kevin: Oh, no. I love Brighton Beach. Why couldn't that have been the question? What is the island? Oh, geez, I'm really sorry.
Brian Lehrer: It is no longer an actual island. I'm at Luna Park. Oh, sorry, Kevin. Thanks for trying.
Kevin: Oh man, yes, me, too. Hey, groceries, groceries, groceries. Chant it tonight if you're in the chamber. Groceries.
Brian Lehrer: All right, we will follow up on that. I think that's advice to Democrats who are going to be there for the State of the Union address tonight. We will, of course, be talking about that address on tomorrow's show. That's what Kevin in Denver wants you to do. The answer was Coney Island, as a lot of you probably figured out. The little factoid there is, unlike Rhode Island, Coney Island wasn't just called that. It used to be an actual island until the Coney Island Creek was filled starting in the 1920s. Emily in the Lower Hudson Valley. Ready to play?
Emily: Yes. Hi, Brian.
Brian Lehrer: Hi. All right. Question number 7. I'm on the often mispronounced street that separates Manhattan's named and numbered streets. I might have a particularly hard time with this If I'm from Texas, where am I?
Emily: Houston Street.
Brian Lehrer: Yes, Houston Street.
Emily: I always wondered why it was pronounced that way.
Brian Lehrer: I know the reason. It's because the street and the city in Texas have different namesakes. The street is named after William Houston, who's considered a founding father, and the city down there after Republic of Texas President Sam Houston from those days. All right, Question 8 for the mug. Are you ready?
Emily: Yes. Only I'd rather have the baseball cap. I already got the mug.
Brian Lehrer: [laughs] Good. That's if you win. You're being very presumptuous, Emily.
Emily: If I win. [laughs]
Brian Lehrer: All right. I'm on the Long Island Rail Road, as far from the city as I can go. Where am I?
Emily: The End of Long Island.
Brian Lehrer: As far from the city. As far as-- Yes, yes. The End of Long Island. I'm sorry I didn't have a Metro-North question for you in the Hudson Valley.
Emily: Yes, me, too. I know where it is. It's not Bridgehampton. It's not Westhampton. It's not Southampton. Maybe it's Southampton?
Brian Lehrer: Keep going.
Emily: It's the one that keeps going past there. I'm sorry. I'm going to--
Brian Lehrer: All right. Nice try. The answer is Montauk. Carlos in Fort Lee. Hi, Carlos. Ready to play?
Carlos: Yes, Brian.
Brian Lehrer: All right. Luckily, you were up next, and there in Fort Lee, you draw an NJ Transit ticket. My NJ Transit question, which is my NJ Transit ticket, says, my destination is Penn Station. Now I'm there, but I'm not in Manhattan. Where am I?
Carlos: In Newark.
Brian Lehrer: Absolutely. Newark Penn Station is a stop on the line. Question 10, for the mug or the hat? I'm on a Metro-North train heading out of state to attend an Ivy League college. My stop is the last stop on that line. What line am I on? Sorry, Emily in the Hudson Valley couldn't get this one. You got the question? You want me to repeat it?
Carlos: Yes, please.
Brian Lehrer: I'm on a Metro-North train heading out of state to attend an Ivy League college. My stop is the last stop on the line. What line am I on?
Carlos: Metro-North, but it stops--
Brian Lehrer: Right. The Metro-North has a few different lines. It has the Hudson line, it has the Harlem line, and--
Carlos: New Haven.
Brian Lehrer: New Haven is right. [fanfare] Do you want the hat or the mug?
Carlos: Oh, the hat. I want to advertise, Brian. Everywhere I go with my hat.
Brian Lehrer: Aw, that's so sweet. Carlos, thank you again. We're going to take your address off the air, and that wraps up today's question quiz. Be sure to tune in tomorrow in the same slot. We'll see what topic we have tomorrow. Brian Lehrer on WNYC. Much more to come today.
