Speaker 2: Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City from WNYC. It's Tuesday, January 28th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Michael Hill: Immigration arrests in New York and across the country may ramp up considerably under quotas put in place over the weekend. WNYC's Arya Sundaram reports.
Arya Sundaram: Each US immigration and Customs Enforcement field office will be required to meet a daily quota of 75 arrests, The Washington Post reports. That's a big leap up from the 24 daily immigration arrests made in New York City in 2023. The Post said the quotas were handed down after President Trump complained that the number of arrests made in his first week in office, about 2,700, were below his expectations. A former ICE worker told WNYC the quota will require a big boost in resources, including to expand the number of detention beds.
Michael Hill: There's a new candidate in the race for New York City Public Advocate. State Assembly Member Jennifer Rajkumar says she's entering the contest after mounting a bid for city comptroller this election cycle. The public advocate serves as a watchdog of the mayoral administration and is second in line of succession at City Hall. Rajkumar represents parts of Queens, including Glendale, Richmond Hill, and Woodhaven. The race also includes incumbent and fellow Democrat, Jumaane Williams. While Williams has openly criticized Mayor Adams, Rajkumar has been one of his closest allies. The New York Jets have a new leadership team in place. New head coach Aaron Glenn says gangrene is ready to bounce back from a disappointing season.
Aaron Glenn: Put your seatbelts on and get ready for the ride. Listen, there are going to be some challenges, but with challenges gives opportunity. Here's what I do know, we're the freaking New York Jets, so we're built for this.
Michael Hill: Wow. The Jets had Super Bowl aspirations last year, but finished with 5 wins and 12 losses. New general manager, Darren Mougey, joined Glenn at the team's facility in Florham Park yesterday. Glenn played eight seasons for the Jets. He most recently served as defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions and was among the most sought after candidates in this year's coaching market. Mougey heads to New York after serving as the general manager for the Denver Broncos.
