[music] Morning Headlines: New York Defies Federal Order on SNAP, No Trash Pickup for Veterans Day, and Remembering Lenny Wilkens
Announcer: Welcome to NYC Now, your source for local news in and around New York City, from WNYC. It's Monday, November 10th. Here's the morning headlines from Michael Hill.
Michael Hill: New York is starting to send out federal food assistance benefits to New Yorkers on SNAP, despite the Trump administration calling for states to undo those payments. Sean Lewis says he spent the last week worried he wouldn't get his payment this month.
Sean Lewis: No, I didn't think I would get it due to all the politics of the federal shutdown. Basically, it's kind of rough when you know you're being told that you're going to be delayed.
Michael Hill: Lewis says he finally got notified his payment will come just a day late this month. The federal government sent a memo to states over the weekend ordering them to reverse any plans to send aid, or risk funding cuts. New York Governor Kathy Hochul's office says it received the memo, and the benefits will still be going out. New Jersey sent them out, and so has Connecticut.
The New York City Department of Sanitation says there will be no trash, curbside composting, or recycling pickup tomorrow in observance of Veterans Day. Households who usually have the garbage picked up on Tuesdays can put it out on the curb tomorrow evening for a collection beginning Wednesday. Sanitation officials say residents may experience some delays as service gets back to normal.
The basketball world is remembering Bed Stuy Brooklyn native, and former New York Knicks coach Lenny Wilkens. Wilkens family says he died yesterday at the age of 88. He starred in the NBA as a point guard, and went on to have a prolific coaching career, in fact coaching more games than anyone else. Wilkens was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player, a coach, and as an assistant coach of the gold medal winning 1992 US Olympic Basketball team known as the Dream Team. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, their three children, and seven grandchildren.
That's two in a row for the New York Jets, Gang Green defeated the Cleveland Browns 27 to 20 yesterday. That's after they started the season with seven straight losses. The win comes after the Jets shipped two fan favorites out of the town last week, Sauce Gardner, and Quinnen Williams. The New York Giants came close but blew a fourth quarter lead to the Chicago Bears and lost 24 to 20. Rookie sensation quarterback Jaxson Dart left the game with a concussion.
56 right now with clouds, showers likely mainly by midday on this Monday, becoming mostly sunny, and then the temperatures fall to the 40s, by late afternoon, a light wind gusting to 20 miles an hour. Then watch out overnight a freeze warning starting after midnight, all the way till midnight nine o' clock in the morning. It's going to be cold. 32 in the city, colder in the outlying areas.
